Don't Be An Entrepreneur (Unless You Are Crazy)

Are you thinking of leaving your corporate life and becoming an entrepreneur? Before you quit your day job that actually pays and start day dreaming, think of whether you fit the entrepreneurship mold...

“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
- Thomas Edison

Here is what could be in store for you:

1. Long, thankless days of hard work
(sure you are building something of great value, but don't expect to hear "Thank You" from anyone until they use your products and services and even then...)

2. Upfront and ongoing investment of money and resources
(what, you thought you don't need to invest your hard-earned money to start something. Welcome to the real world!)

3. Bank loans and growing debt that could ruin you financially
(enough said, watch out! you may have to tell your creditors to wait and wait and wait... until they get antsy)

4. Hard Truth that No one wants to invest in your company
(angel investors think you don't have the best idea or the right team; venture capitalists think you are not ready yet. Either way, you don't have investors to bank roll you)

5. Running out of money and time, and hitting that dead end
(you haven't figured out yet how to make money, and now you don't have anymore money to put in the business. Ouch!)

6. Less or no time for family
(or even when you spend time, you are not paying much attention to the family and spending more time on your smartphone)

7. Sleepless nights and sleepy days
(oh yeah... get used to it! What is the time? Is this day or night? Is today a weekday or a weekend?)

8. Moodiness, restlessness and sometimes, cynical attitude
(this happens to the best of entrepreneurs. Especially, when the company is not getting where you thought it should be, and you are stuck)

9. Broken or strained relationships with family members, relatives and even employees
(this one can be eye opening since you may not be able to spend quality time with them)

10. Nagging thought that your corporate friends are doing well and laughing more
(and some family members and friends keep on reminding you plenty of times about this)

11. Laughing less, feeling lonely, and getting pressured
(you may not show it, but from inside, you are always thinking harder and harder on how you will take your company to the next level)

12. Employees who quit, don't work hard, don't deliver ...
(complain a lot, and even stick a knife in your back for their personal gains. shit happens! be ready...)

13. Penny pinching, cost-cutting, and trying to save everywhere and on everything
(and that may not be enough, and then you begin to think of how to save your company!)

If you can stomach all this and then some, welcome to the crazy and exciting world of entrepreneurship! And I wish you all the best and great success ahead... and don't quit early or think of quitting! In the U.S., there are 28 million small business entrepreneurs, founders, sole proprietors and owners; 9 out of 10 new startups fail or close; in effect, an entrepreneur is in exclusive company, and you are not alone!
