How Mark Zuckerberg will Connect the World?

Mark Zuckerberg, founder & CEO of Facebook is on a dual mission:

A. He wants everyone on Earth to have affordable access to the Internet through Internet.org

B. He wants over half the population on Earth to connect and share using Facebook and Facebook companies

"Our goal with Internet.org is to make affordable access to basic Internet services available to every person in the world." - Mark Zuckerberg

Internet.org is doing well... and has already helped over 3 million new people access the internet within a short time, primarily in Philippines and Paraguay.

However, Zuckerberg has grander plans for Internet.org:
"The Connectivity Lab at Facebook is developing ways to make affordable internet access possible in communities around the world. The team is exploring a variety of technologies, including high-altitude long-endurance planes, satellites and lasers."

The Lab includes some of the world’s top experts from Ascenta, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, NASA’s Ames Research Center, and the National Optical Astronomy Observatory.

"Connecting the world is one of the fundamental challenges of our time. When people have
access to the internet, they get to participate in the knowledge economy.

"Expanding internet access could create another 140 million new jobs, lift 160 million people out of poverty, and reduce child mortality by hundreds of thousands of lives. Connectivity isn’t an end in itself, but it’s a powerful tool for change." - Mark Zuckerberg

In this whitepaper, Zuckeberg talks about drones flying at around 65,000 feet which can power the Internet for an entire medium-sized city. He believes that aerial connectivity is the way to go because it is simple to deploy, is quite affordable, and is plug-and-play.

By acquiring WhatsApp last month, which is on course to connect over a billion people, Facebook has the potential to reach out to over 2 billion people around the world within the next year or two.

In 2012, before going IPO, Facebook acquired Instagram for $1 billion. Most everyone thought this was a humongous deal (in the same vein as Google acquiring YouTube) for a company that still hadn't gone public. Facebook could have competed with Instagram directly. However, Zuckerberg had a bold vision and foresight:

“We believe these are different experiences that complement each other. But in order to do this well, we need to be mindful about keeping and building on Instagram’s strengths and features rather than just trying to integrate everything into Facebook.

“That’s why we’re committed to building and growing Instagram independently. Millions of people around the world love the Instagram app and the brand associated with it, and our goal is to help spread this app and brand to even more people." - Mark Zuckerberg

Today, Instagram is growing faster than Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest combined. Incredible indeed!

Both A. and B. feed off each other... as more people access the Internet that didn't have prior access, they would in turn use Facebook even more; Facebook will be integrated in the basic Internet services offering.

Very few visionaries have a pulse of the future, much less knowledge of ways beyond the present to keep their companies relevant and existent. Many a companies have gone by the wayside because they didn't anticipate the future. According to Larry Page, Google CEO and co-founder,  "The main thing that has caused companies to fail, in my view, is that they missed the future

Zuckerberg is on that very short list of visionaries who sees and anticipates the future, has a bold vision of connecting the world, and is working hard today to effect that change.
