Maboneng Photography Tour in collaboration with I was Shot in Joburg
The Walking Tour
Past Experiences, Johannesburg’s Original Walking Tour Company, in collaboration with the iwasshot Foundation, the label that provides a platform for former street children to generate an income, facilitates a fantastic inner-city experience to all citizens. This collective event takes place once a month and includes an introduction to the project and a walking tour of the Maboneng Precinct and surrounding areas. Participants will be guided by a guide and some of the iwasshot in Joburg Team. The aim of this walk is to explore the Inner city, learn about its regeneration, history, public art and graffiti and take photos, keeping in mind the theme ”Finding Beauty where there is none”.
Ending with lunch and a drink in The iwasshot In Joburg Studio situated at Arts on Main, there is a long table set up for a relaxed meal. Included in the price is a food voucher- so that you can choose your meal at the market (conditions apply).
About The Iwasshot Foundation
The Iwasshot Foundation is a direct assault on homelessness. The Iwasshot FOUNDATION provides Skills Development Programmes, with photography as the medium, to children living on the streets of our Urban Centres. The Foundation is a non-profit, non-government organization aimed at strengthening the potential of individual lives - educating, recognizing and caring for children who hold on to the smallest light of hope for a better future. The Foundation stands independent of discrimination of religion, race, culture and gender boundaries.
The Foundation operates in close collaboration with shelters that provide a safe environment for these children. The Foundation makes use of existing infrastructures as far as possible and builds upon them. The programmes are implemented by Bernard Viljoen, registered architect and professional photographer, through direct contact with the children. Iwasshot Foundation initiates community-based projects that focus on the personal development and enrichment of children who might otherwise not have had the opportunity to explore their creativity.
Focus lies within the inner cities where children are constantly exposed to the darker side of humanity. Iwasshot FOUNDATION works within communities affected by homelessness and highlights the vibrancy, paradoxes, multiplicity and talents of children who should be at play. The aim is to change the perspective of street children and re-empower them through innovative programmes within their communities, to educate and enhance positive awareness.
I Was Shot in Joburg aims to be a sustainable organisation and offers corporate photography, exhibitions, corporate events in conjunction with Past Experiences and a range of products available online and in their store at Maboneng.
About Past Experiences
Past Experiences is Joburg’s Original Walking Tour Company (started in 2009). We are hugely passionate about the Inner City, its history, graffiti, public art, African culture and communities. We offer a wide array of walking and public transport tours, events, school tours, corporate events and lectures on the Inner City. We feel very strongly that we need to give back to the areas we work in and therefore work closely with a select few community projects that we really believe in.
Next tour will take place in May 2015.
