Business Article Reading for academic inferences (Intensive English Program RMUTT) (Week 2)

Reading and creating inference from each main idea of the reading passage separates the conventional reading and academic reading.  In university academic reading, students must know how to create new knowledge and ideas from the given ideas in an article.  Inferring each given idea will create a bubble of connected new knowledge around the main idea were by the fundamental objective of university research is actually at its evolution.

The Academic Instructor

The fundamental objective of reading and inferring is to impart to the learners that the knowledge and information alone in the reading passage is not the outmost details of ideas, rather it is just a start of new knowledge were the students can ponder the innovative concepts that can be applied in other aspects of university learning through reading.  As for week two mapping the conceptual ideas in each reading passage is more convenient for my learners to visualize the whole framework of the reading article and subsequently use their thinking skills and knowledge to create new inferential knowledge.

From the business English communication point of view, inferences are always subject for testing in statistical manner.  Having said that, students will benefit from the lessons learned when they will use the lesson in their marketing, international business, and management classes with research related projects.

By next week (scheduled as 3rdweek) the objective of the intensive english reading class is to argue the different inferences from the main idea.  Indeed, students are expected to respond the given inferences with positive and negative notions and their supporting details.  It is very important for students in university to know how to argue their assumptions and inferences based from their stored knowledge.  As for this week, making inference creation from the given main idea details are likely to be the objective for this week’s study.

INTERACTIVE ACTIVITY:

Students are asked to form by groups and create a Mind Mapping diagram to visually put their main ideas and inferences in writing.  By this concept the group can collaboratively help each other in terms of relating the whole business article into a written framework.
