CLINTON TESTIMONY: RANKING REPUBLICAN CLAIMS DEMS DELIBERATELY HINDERED BENGHAZI INVESTIGATION

"It may be smart politics but it is a lousy way to run a serious investigation.”

After months of calling the Benghazi investigation a partisan attempt to bring down her presidential campaign, Hillary Clinton today arrived on Capitol Hill, and was immediately subjected to a dressing down from the leading Republican on the investigative committee, Rep. Trey Gowdy.

Gowdy ripped into Clinton, after an opening speech in which she again took the high ground and stated “We need leadership at home to match our leadership abroad… leadership that puts national security ahead of ideology.”

“Despite all the previous investigations and talk about partisan agendas. I’m here to honor those we lost, and to do what I can to aid those who serve us still,” she added.

Gowdy insisted that the investigation was seeking “the truth” about the 2012 attacks, and was not out to get Clinton, as she has suggested even in her own campaign ads.

“Not a single member of this Committee signed up for an investigation into you or your email system,” he said. “We signed up because we wanted to honor the service and sacrifice of 4 people sent to a foreign land to represent us – who were killed – and do everything we can to prevent it from happening to others.”

Gowdy explained that the issues surrounding Clinton’s emails were of her own making.

“You made exclusive use of personal email and a personal server. When you left the State Department you kept those public records to yourself for almost two years. You and your attorneys decided what to return and what to delete. Those decisions were your decisions, not ours.” he said.

Gowdy went on to attack Democrats on the committee for attempting to hinder the investigation to protect Clinton:

“We would be much closer to finding out what happened in writing the final report if Democrats on this committee had helped us just a little bit pursue the facts.” he noted.

“The Democrats on this committee never would have been interviewed, your public record would still be private, thousands of documents never would have been accessed and we wouldn’t have the emails of our own ambassador. It may be smart politics but it is a lousy way to run a serious investigation.” Gowdy urged.

On the Democratic side, ranking member Rep. Elijah Cummings charged that the panel is a “taxpayer-funded fishing expedition” out to bring down Clinton.

“Clearly, it is possible to conduct a serious, bipartisan investigation. What is impossible is for any reasonable person to continue denying that Republicans are squandering millions of taxpayer dollars on this abusive effort to derail Secretary Clinton’s presidential campaign,” he said.

In a Rassmussen poll released this week, a majority of Americans, 52 percent, don’t believe Clinton is telling the truth about the incident in Libya three years ago.

Just 27% think she has been honest during the investigations. Twenty-two percent (22%) are undecided.
