unwanted hair from our face and our bodies is an ageless practice. For me personally, shaving is not fun. But, it is quite necessary. Yes, I know, there are some people who embrace their hair and that's cool, but that doesn't work for me. I need to shave on a regular basis and most men have to deal with shaving on a daily basis. It's such an instrumental part of our daily regimen that it's as common as showering and brushing our teeth. How many times have you faced the morning with the unpleasant realization that you have to shave? Shaving Related Article: 5 easy skin care tips for men Men and women have different concerns because our shaving regimen is not the same. And the facts that affect how we shave can be very different. Do we exfoliate our skin before or after shaving? Do we go with the grain of the hair or against it? Do we need to apply moisturizer? Let's break it down for both men and women and get to the bottom of some of the most common shaving concerns by playing Shaving Tips Trivia. Shaving Tips Trivia #1 Do you shave with the grain or against the grain of the hair? The answer is… with the grain of the hair if you are a man. But, against the grain if you are a woman. Ok, so there is a difference between men and women. Who knew? We all know that when you shave against the grain you do get a nice clean shave, but when it comes to the delicate skin on the face and neck you could also end up with skin irritation and razor burn. It's a good practice to always shave the hair on your face and neck in the direction the hair is growing. This will help to prevent shaving bumps. The skin on the neck is thinner than the skin on the face and for many, it can be quite delicate. It's important guys to pay attention to the exact pattern your hair is growing so you can shave accordingly. Men, if you do this you will definitely help to avoid getting irritating razor burn and those pesky razor bumps. Ladies, when we are shaving various body parts like our legs, you definitely will get a much closer and cleaner shave if you shave in various angles and that means going against the grain. Much different than a man shaving his face, we don't have the same concerns with burn and bumps. However, you must shave with a fresh razor blade or you could experience a bit of irritation or, even a bump or two, depending on the area of the body. So there's definitely a difference when it comes to shaving the body versus the face. But what about exfoliating? Is this necessary for a clean shave? Shaving Tips Trivia #2 Should I exfoliate before shaving? The answer is… yes, and this goes for both men and women. Exfoliating your skin has many great benefits. It helps remove dead skin cells and debris from the surface, resulting in skin that is brighter in appearance and smoother to the touch. A good scrubbing will help clean the pores and remove excess sebum. It also leaves your skin feeling silky soft. When it comes to shaving, exfoliating can definitely help to unclog your pores, which allows for your razor to glide smoothly across your skin. The result is a much closer shave. For men, a good scrubbing can also lift up the facial hair by exposing the hair follicles. You may only need to scrub a few days a week, but the results are well worth it. So reach for your favorite exfoliator before shaving and scrub away. Shaving Tips Trivia #3 Should I shave while in the shower? The answer is… yes. The steam and the warm water combined help to soften your skin and your hair. When this happens, your skin is much better prepared for shaving and the results can be amazing. Of course, you never want to shave your skin without water. Sounds like a no brainer, but I think we have all grabbed a razor and did a quick swipe while running out the door. Just don't it. A dry shave can result in trouble for your skin. Think painful little nicks everywhere. Plus, if shave in the shower, you kill two birds with one stone. It's a great time saver. Shaving Tip Trivia #4 Do I need to apply moisturizer post shaving? The answer is… yes. For the men, you have to remember that every time you scrape a razor across your face you are not only removing facial hair, you are also removing some of the healthy oils from the surface. These oils are further compromised if an alcohol-based aftershave lotion is applied. So those oils need to be replaced to prevent the skin from dehydrating. And of course an SPF lotion is the best option if you are going out into the sun. The same rules apply to a woman's legs. Some beauty experts think women should apply oil to their legs prior to shaving. This is subject to debate of course, but applying moisturizer to the legs post shaving is a must. Aloe vera-infused lotions and gels are perfect post shaving. Your skin will look clean, soft, smooth and more youthful as a result. Shaving Tip Trivia #5 Can men and women use the same type of razors? The answer is… no. It would be great if all razors were created equal, but that's just not the case. A man's facial hair tends to be thicker and coarser then most women's body hair. And their skin is slightly different in texture. Razors are personal to the user. Some prefer moisturizing strips, a certain handle, single blades or even multi-blade razors to do the job. Find the razor that is most appropriate for you. You may need to experiment until you find the right one and you will be amazed at the countless options available. Just remember, no matter how convenient, never share your razor with anyone. Your razor is as personal as your toothbrush and sharing it with someone else is incredibly unhygienic. I'm sure you all passed the Skin Tips Trivia questions with flying colors. It really comes down to trial and error and bit of common sense. Just remember our skin is the largest organ of the body and we need to take care of it. So be gentle! Remember, the healthiest skin is always the most beautiful (and most handsome). Written by beauty expert, Jacquie Carter. Jacquie is Director of Outer Nutrition at Herbalife.
