Economic nationalism is here to stay, President Donald Trump’s former chief strategist, Steve Bannon, said in an interview aired Sunday — the only question is which side wield it.

“The only question before us: Is it going to be a left-wing populism or a right-wing populism. . . . And that is the question that will be answered in 2020.” -- Steve Bannon

Speaking to CBS News’ CBS, -1.79% Charlie Rose on “60 Minutes,” Bannon said the Democrats need to face growing anti-establishment discord within the party.

“The problem in the Democratic Party? They haven’t had a civil war,” Bannon said, predicting that “they’ll never be competitive” until that discord is resolved.

In a wide-ranging interview, Bannon, who is back working at Breitbart News, attacked Hillary Clinton — “She doesn’t really have a grasp” — and said Trump’s decision to fire then-FBI Director James Comey was the biggest mistake in “maybe modern political history.”

Bannon blamed Trump’s record low approval ratings on his inability to enact his legislative agenda, but still predicted Republican gains in the 2018 midterm elections and Trump’s re-election in 2020.

He also said China was the key to resolving the crisis with North Korea, and that the U.S. should use its economic leverage, including sanctions and capital markets, to force China to act, even if it hurts the U.S. economy.

In a portion of the interview released last week, Bannon dismissed the Catholic Church’s criticism of Trump’s immigration policies, saying they “need illegal aliens to fill the churches.”
